As summer brings warmer weather and more time outside, we’re excited to announce that All About Eyes is joining National Sunglasses Day on Thursday, June 27. Alongside The Vision Council, the major advocate for the optical industry, we’ll highlight the importance of sports sunglasses for protecting eyes from harmful sun rays and enhancing outdoor fun.

Whether you’re a pro athlete or just love being outside, protecting your eyes is key, and All About Eyes is here to provide the best eyewear for all lifestyles. Please come to our shop to see the selection we have on offer.

Why so much focus on sunglasses?

For starters, spending time in the sun without proper eyewear protection can have long-term negative effects on your overall health. Conditions from unprotected Ultra Violet (UV) exposure can result in:

  • Inflammation of the cornea and conjunctiva.
  • Cataracts, a clouding of the eye’s normal clear lens.
  • Pterygium, which is a painful and irritating growth of fleshy tissue which can cover part of the cornea.
  • Cancer in and around the eye, including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma.
  • Macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in western countries.

To avoid these and other conditions, it’s important to wear protective clothing, eyewear, and sunscreen to prevent unwanted conditions.

A Word About Sports Sunglasses

Sports-related eye injuries account for about 30,000 emergency room visits each year and a majority of them happen to those under the age of 18. And if the player had been wearing proper eye protection, about 90% of those injuries could have been avoided. The right UV-protective eyewear can significantly enhance performance in sports by atomizing vision clarity, depth perception, and contrast sensitivity.

To join in the National Sunglasses Day fun, we invite you to post a sunglass selfie on social media with the hashtag #NationalSunglassesDay. The Vision Council will share posts from around the country on its social media channels.

Have fun outside, but stay safe! Gear up, shades on! #NationalSunglassesDay
